Walk across Chestnut Street from the Boone Tavern and you’re right on campus. Located at College Square, a block of whitewashed brick buildings, Berea College anchors the town. The town is home to a tight-knit arts-and-crafts community and a 154-year-old college that’s free to students in the bottom third, economically, of the nation’s incoming freshmen.Ĭlassic Kentucky it ain’t, but Berea’s neither-here-nor-there qualities - eschewing horse farms and hill folk for academic bootstrapping and an artistic community - make it Kentucky’s best exception to the rule. When there are no mint juleps, either, you know you’ve arrived in the (very dry) town of Berea. I wasn’t paying attention as we landed thankfully my seatmate, a native, nudged me as the plane began our flight’s final approach. THE airport in Lexington, Kentucky, likes to tout the view passengers get when they fly in as one of the prettiest in the United States.
