This is pitched somewhere between the Firaxis games and the Microprose games in terms of depth. I have well over 800 hours in XCOM 2 and bought the original Microprose terror from the Deep on UK release day in the 90's and completed it on the hardest level many times. Though I've only bought about 3 full priced games.

The players final power spike in XCom 2 got criticized by many as an end game that feels like a victory lap. That philosophy makes the game incredibly easy and cheese-filled once a player has terminator builds. Phoenix Point, however, has a screw-you attitude towards balance and limitations to super-powerful abilities and just lets the player unleash the kraken as often as they want. But those abilities were only unlocked at Colonel rank and were limited by cool down timers (Serial) or one-use per mission abilities (Banish). XCom 2 had a similar problem with some OP equipment like the Chosen weapons and the Alien Rulers suits as well as some incrediblely powerful perks like Serial and the Reaper’s Banish that could allow one soldier to clear half a map. The rest are pretty much rubbish.Īnother core problem with the game is it goes all-in on the terminator builds and super-mega-op soldier abilities. Mindfraggers provide a unique way for the enemy to snag soldiers and mind control them too.Īnd that’s about it for well designed enemies in the game. So a smart player develops specific strategies to counter it such as getting it to panic after taking out its head. But if you take out its head to break mind control, it becomes incredibly dangerous thanks to its powerful melee attack. It has to get close to do anything, and it loves to mind control soldiers. Most of the enemies are just re-skinned bullet sponges that look different thanks to their art styles but are pretty much the same in terms of gameplay. One problem is that a lot of the enemies in the game don’t have a weakness, no defining characteristic that makes them unique, memorable, or especially challenging. That also makes the core problems really deep-rooted and kind of hard to fix. I wanted to like the game but so far it feels like a chore, so this is it for me.Ī lot of it comes down to bad game design, just stupid decision made at the pencil and paper stage of the game’s development. I have enjoyed the X-COM saga in the past but I'm in the minority that actually liked Chimera Squad more than the canon games. (my all time favourite), Into The Breach, and the recent The Last Spell. I specially love small-ish indie games like Invisible Inc. I enjoy turn-based games that make you ponder and think of strategies.
